Hearth Tax Register 1670

The Hearth Tax of 1670 was an English and Welsh property tax, introduced by Charles II, charging two shillings annually per fireplace or stove. It funded the Crown and was collected from occupiers, not owners. Exemptions existed for the poor. Unpopular due to intrusive inspections, it was repealed in 1689.

The list below, transcribed by the late Llangwm historian, W. Grenville Thomas, is a complete record of those residents who were liable for the tax, and the number of hearths which they were taxed upon; further below is a list of residents who were classed as paupers and therefore exempt from taxation.

N.B. Name spellings are consistent with the original 1670 document.
